Inquiry 1: Personal & Cultural Expression: Volleyball, Swimming, & Fitness
Volleyball:
Week 1:
Bump pass, Volleying, and Setting-
Students will begin with a progression this week. The first step of the progression will to introduce the set and bump passes. The students will learn and see all three in the first step. The next step the students will learn the skill cues to position their hands properly for the bump pass. The students will then learn triangle formation to have learn the set pass. The students will work with partners, groups, and then in game like situation called volleying, using a big ball first.The students will be graded daily on a Participation Rubric and a Behavior Rubric. A few other formative assessments will be skill cue checks, entrance and exit slips, and question day. The big summative assessment will be at the end of every unit with a worksheet on skill cues and techniques taught in class.The students will be focusing on Compassion this week as their ESLR.
Week 2:
Serving- Overhand and Underhand Serve-
The students this week will work on the Overhand and Underhand Serve. The students will first begin working on the skill cues given by the teacher about the underhand serve. The underhand serve will be the first serve taught, due to it an easier serve for all students to do. The students will work against the wall, then with partners, and last over the net. The students will begin to play a rally serve game. No points will be assessed this week. The students will be graded daily on a Participation Rubric and a Behavior Rubric. A few other formative assessments will be skill cue checks, entrance and exit slips, and question day. The big summative assessment will be at the end of every unit with a worksheet on skill cues and techniques taught in class The students will be focusing on Sensitivity this week as their ESLR.
Week 3:
Game Play- Rules of the Games-
The students will review the previous skills taught the last two weeks. The students will then be taught gamer like rules and scoring. The students will continue to practice the skills throughout the game like scenario for the entire week. The students will be graded daily on a Participation Rubric and a Behavior Rubric. A few other formative assessments will be skill cue checks, entrance and exit slips, and question day. The big summative assessment will be at the end of every unit with a worksheet on skill cues and techniques taught in class The students are to make sure all rules are followed, while they are being assessed by the teacher. The students will be focusing on Intelligence this week as their ESLR.
Swimming:
Week 1:
Introduction to Swimming- Rules, Breathing and Front Crawl- Students will learn the safety rules of the swimming pool. Students will learn to adjust to the water. Students will then learn Basic Breathing Skills in the water. The main focus of the week will be breathing and blowing bubbles to practice breathing in the water. The students will begin working on the front crawl as well. Learning the correct hand movements and leg kick for the front crawl swim. The students will focus on their breathing for short distances this week. The students will be graded daily on a Participation Rubric and a Behavior Rubric. A few other formative assessments will be skill cue checks, entrance and exit slips, and question day. The big summative assessment will be at the end of every unit with a worksheet on skill cues and techniques taught in class The ESLR for the week will be Courage.
Week 2:
Backstroke and Breaststroke- Students will continue to practice Basic and Advance Breathing Skills inside the pool. The students will review the Front Crawl, and begin the Backstroke in class. The key elements for the backstroke are the arms, kick, and the head position for the body. This will allow the swimmer to move from point A to point B the fastest. The second stroke for the wee will be the Breaststroke which will be the same elements to focus on. We are having the students focus again on the leg movement, arm movement, and breathing for this stroke.The students will be graded daily on a Participation Rubric and a Behavior Rubric. A few other formative assessments will be skill cue checks, entrance and exit slips, and question day. The big summative assessment will be at the end of every unit with a worksheet on skill cues and techniques taught in class. The ESLR for the week will be Vitality.
Week 3:
Intro to Swimming: Front Stroke and Treading Water- The students will then work on using the Throwing Motion to swim. The students will try to get a little more comfortable by getting farther away from the wall. The first few weeks will focus on getting comfortable breathing and the last two weeks will about techniques with the front and back stroke. The students will be graded daily on a Participation Rubric and a Behavior Rubric. A few other formative assessments will be skill cue checks, entrance and exit slips, and question day. The big summative assessment will be at the end of every unit with a worksheet on skill cues and techniques taught in class. The ESLR for the week will be Sensitivity.
Week 4:
Games in the Water and Diving- Students will work on using Noodles and Boards this week. Here the students will be focusing on kicking their feet and breathing. The students can also have a swimming race for the ones that are comfortable in the water. The students will work on treading water and diving as well this week. The students will have to do a shallow dive from a knee position and also a standing position.The biggest thing of the week is to make sure the students are focusing on having fun and being safe in the water. Some students will begin to learn the basics for the back stroke. The students will be graded daily on a Participation Rubric and a Behavior Rubric. A few other formative assessments will be skill cue checks, entrance and exit slips, and question day. The big summative assessment will be at the end of every unit with a worksheet on skill cues and techniques taught in class. The ESLR for the week will be Compassion.
Fitness:
Week 1:
Movement Concepts and Skill themes. The students will be working on training for the fitness test for the following week. This week will be all about learning flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and agility. The focus for the students will be on how much they try and not on how well they do. The students will work on the using different movement concepts and skill themes to train for the class. The students will do this in the fitness center for one class, and inside the gymnasium for the other two classes. The students will be graded daily on a Participation Rubric and a Behavior Rubric. A few other formative assessments will be skill cue checks, entrance and exit slips, and question day. The big summative assessment will be at the end of every unit with a worksheet on skill cues and techniques taught in class. The students will be focusing on Intelligence this week as their ESLR.
Week 2:
Physical Fitness Testing- Students will be tested with push-ups, sit-ups, and running. The students focus this week will be on Vitality. The students will be tested on all five major components of Physical Fitness. The students will be tested in push-ups, sit-ups, Strength, and Running. The students will be graded daily on a Participation Rubric and a Behavior Rubric. A few other formative assessments will be skill cue checks, entrance and exit slips, and question day. The big summative assessment will be at the end of every unit with a worksheet on skill cues and techniques taught in class. The students will be focusing on Courage this week as their ESLR.
Inquiry 2: Scientific and Technical Innovation: Striking (Tennis and Table Tennis) & Games (Floor Hockey, Badminton, and Lacrosse)
Tennis:
Week 1:
Students will learn the forehand and backhand swing. This week is just introducing striking a tennis ball with a tennis racket. The students will learn through repetition against a wall, with a partner, and last over the net. The main focus will be on the skill cues of body sideways, arm back, follow through. The second big focus will be the handshake grip, and if the students are holding the racket correctly. The students will end the week with King of the court over the net. The assessments for the week will be Striking Assessment and Skill Cue Test. The Formative Assessments for the week are the Participation and Behavior Rubrics. The ESLR for the week will be Vitality.
Week 2:
Students will review the forehand and backhand swing for the first part of the week. Next the students will learn how to rally and serve with a partner and over the net. The key components of the week will to follow the same skill cues, but trying to focus on accuracy and power with their hits. The students will try to rally back and forth with their partners in an open space and then over a net. The students will end the week with a doubles king of the court tournament. The assessments for the week will be the Skill Cue Test.The Formative Assessments for the week are the Participation and Behavior Rubrics. The ESLR for the week will be Compassion.
Table Tennis:
Week 1:
Students will begin to learn the grip of a tennis paddle first. The grip is called the L shape or V shape grip. The students will learn how to correctly do the forehand and backhand swing with a partner first. The students will focus on the skills cues of body sideways, eyes on the ball, arm, back, and follow through. The students will focus on their position to retrieve the ball that are returned to them, so we will call this the ready position. The students will work over the net with a partner. Each table will have 4 to 6 student at it, depending on the class size. The students will work on just partner passing back and forth. Once the students get more comfortable then the students will rally back and forth. The students the second class will work on the backhand swing. The students will focus on using both, once the back hand is mastered. The students will learn how to rally, and when to use each swing. The formative assessments for the week are the participation rubric and behavior rubric. The Summative Assessment for the Week is the Table Tennis Poster. The ESLR for the week will be Intelligence.
Week 2:
The students will begin to learn the rules of the game, and focus on how to play in different places in the world. The students will learn a few different types of table tennis styles, and will have to play each one throughout the class. The students will practice rallying this week on the forehand and back hand swing. The students will also practice the serve which is a key element to table tennis. The students will get some game play at the end of the week. The formative assessments for the week will be the participation and behavior rubric. The summative assessment for the week will be to write about their favorite style of table tennis, and why (6+1 Writing Score). The ESLR for the week will be Sensitivity.
Floor Hockey:
Week 1:
The students will begin learning about dribbling this week with a hockey stick. The skill cues for this week will be knees bent, two hands on the stick, and soft hands. The big focus will be learning about dribbling standing still and dribbling around the gymnasium with a ball or a puck. The students are to use different speeds and be able to control their dribble at all times. The students will begin to then learn about passing, after a review from last class with dribbling. The skill cues for passing are keeping the ball low, two hands on the stick, and push the ball gently. The object for catching is to receive the pass gently instead of just placing the stick down. The big focus of the week is soft hands. The students first will pass against the wall and then with a partner standing still, and the last one while moving. The formative assessments for the week will be the behavior rubrics and participation rubrics. The summative assessment this week will be a skill cue test. The ESLR for the week will be Courage.
Week 2:
The students will begin to talk about the Introduction to shooting. The students will focus on two different shots, the first one being the Wrist Shot. The skill cues for the Wrist shot are two hands on the stick, let the ball roll off the top of the stick, flick the wrist, and follow through. The release point is key for the accuracy of the shot. The second shot is the slap shot, which will be taught but not used much during the game due to safety. The reason for teaching this shot is to show power hits and when they are suppose to be used. The student will work on lifting the stick up and hitting the puck and not the floor. The focus for the week will be for the students to shoot against the wall, at a target, and last into a goal. The students will use this during game play during the week as well. The formative assessments for the week are the behavior rubric and participation rubric. The summative assessment for the week is the Games Assessment. The ESLR for the week will be Vitality.
Badminton:
Week 1:
The students this week will begin learning about the Introduction to Badminton. The students already have a good amount of knowledge on Badminton, so most of this will be review for the next two weeks. The students will work on the forehand and backhand swing in practice, for the first class. The students will work on moving the feet, staying balance, and striking the birdie with the correct form. The students will then learn the rules of the game, and how to keep score. The students will focus on singles and doubles play to prepare for the following week's tournament. The formative assessments for the week are the behavior rubric and the participation rubric. The summative assessments for this week are the poster on the essential questions for the week, and what those questions mean to them. The ESLR for the week will be Compassion.
Week 2:
The students will review the forehand and back hand swing at the beginning of the week. The students will talk about the serve as well this week. The focus will be on power and accuracy this week and how to adjust both of them. Badminton is a sport most of the students already know, so once feeling comfortable, the students will get right into a singles and doubles tournament for the rest of the week. This will have an award for the winners at the end of the tournament. The formative assessments for the week will be the behavior rubric and participation rubric. The summative assessment for the week will be the Badminton Skill Cue Test. The ESLR for the week is Intelligence.
Lacrosse Unit:
Week 1:
Throwing and Catching- The students this week will begin to learn the basics of Throwing and Catching. The students will first throw and catch with just a ball by themselves. The first ball would Soft bouncy ball then to a harder ball. The skill cues for throwing are step with opposition, arm back, follow through, and two hands on the sticks. The students will first learn how to grip a stick then how to throw it. The skill cues for catching is two hands on the stick, eyes on the ball, and absorb the catch. The students will work first by themselves, next with a partner close together, and last farther apart for distance. The students will strive to work on getting the ball to hit their partner in the chest from the distance they are apart from one another. If the distance is to close then the teacher can extend the distance throughout the throws. The formative assessments for the week are the behavior rubric and the participation rubric. An oral summative assessment will be given this week. The ESLR for the week is Sensitivity.
Week 2:
The students are learning how to Cradle while moving around the field to catch an open pass. The students are continuing to work on passing throughout the week with mini games, but the main focus will be about moving without the ball at first and then with the ball. The students will begin to learn about the rich history of the game of Lacrosse and how it is played today around the world. The students will learn the rules of the game and to move around the field. The students will then get a chance to play a live game this week using the rules and techniques. The students are using the throwing, catching, and moving techniques that were taught throughout the previous weeks. The formative assessments for the week are the behavior rubric and the participation rubric. The summative assessment is a writing assessment for Lacrosse. The ESLR for the week is Courage.
Inquiry 3: Fairness and Development: Fitness, Basketball, & Soccer
Fitness Unit:
Week 1:
Introduction to Fitness- This Week will be about preparing the students for Fitness Testing the following Week. The students will show progression in class by starting with 9 laps, then 12 laps, then finally 19 laps indoors. The same would go for the push-up test and the sit-up test, where the students would be given a goal of 5 and increased from there. The students are challenged to try their best and not focus on the outcome of number or time. The students in the high school class are to advance their scores each year to improve in their overall physicall fitness. The students will do scooter cardio in class to train, as well as repetitions through Fitness Stations. The first day will have four stations: Running, Push-ups, Scooters, and Jump Ropes. The second day will have Sit-Reach, Sit-ups, Scooters, and Push-ups. The focus of the week will be about preparing them for the fitness tests the following weeks. The best way to do this is by having them learn about each test during this week. The activities can be varied based off age level. The ESLR for the week is Courage.
Week 2:
Fitness Testing- The students will be tested this week. The week will consist of four tests: Mile Run, Sit and Reach, Push-ups, and Sit-ups. The Mile Run (19 laps) and Push-ups Test (Counted by Mr. K) will be done on Day 1. These two tests will have a ten minute interval in between them. For accuracy, the Mile Run will be done with a partner using Popsicle sticks. This is the best way to ensure the students are running the correct number of laps. The push-up test is for the students to do as many as possible before the max number of 50. The cadence for the Test is down by the teacher's voice. On Day 2, the teachers will test the students on the Sit-Reach and Sit-up Test. The Sit-up Test is to do as many sit-ups as possible before one minute is up. The Sit-Reach will give the person two attempts to record the score. The ESLR for the week is Vitality.
Basketball Unit:
Week 1:
Introduction to Passing- The students will begin the week learning about passing. The main passes for the week are the chest pass, bounce pass, and the overhead pass. These passes will be taught first against the wall, with a partner, and last while moving. The object for the week is for the students to be able to pass during actual game play. The students will be tested on how well they can perform each skill cue for each pass.The students will focus this week on the rules of passing, and when we use each pass during the basketball game. The students then will advance onto the part of passing in a game correctly with cuts and timing. In middle school the students are working on learning the passes, but in high school the students are being challenged on making the correct passes at the right time. The students will focus on Compassion this week as an ESLR this week.
Week 2:
Introduction to Dribbling- The students will be focusing on dribbling a basketball throughout the week. The students will work Dribbling a ball stationary, while moving, and use different speeds. The biggest focus of the week will be to focus on controlling the dribble at a comfortable speed. The students will work on dribbling stationary around their circle. The students once advance, can begin to move up and around the court. The students will then work on controlling the dribble throughout the class up and down the court. The students will work first without a defender and the second time with a defender. The students are pausing every three to four steps for a hesitation step. The biggest focus of the week is control, which will be shown during Dribble Tag and Game Play during the week. The high school students are working on driving into the lane, dribbling under pressure, press break, and lastly working on controlling the ball before the shot. The middle school students learn the basics of dribbling and the high school students go to the next step. The students will focus on Intelligence as an ESLR this week.
Week 3:
Introduction to Rules of the Game/Shooting- The students will focus on shooting a ball this week. The biggest thing for the students is to work on the form of their shot and when to use certain shots at different times on the court. The students will focus on foul shots, jump shots, and layups for the week. If there is enough time at the end of the week, the students can work on farther out shots, including the three point shot. The student s will follow the T-Formation with the hands while shooting. The students will work on keeping their hands in a t formation, bent knees, and follow through. The students will get to learn the rules of basketball and watch some performances on basketball. The students will focus on Sensitivity as an ESLR this week.
Week 4:
Game Play- The last week of the unit will be about tying everything that was learned throughout the previous weeks into one final week of game play. The students will get to learn the rules of the game, and have to follow these rules throughout the entire class. The students will rotate with four different teams, to give many opportunities for students to play. The students will play the first day half court and the second day full court. The students will be assess on their participation and their skill level or in how much improvement has shown from day 1. Overall the experience for this week is about enjoying the game. The students will mainly focus on using the pass, dribble, and shooting during game play. The students will focus on Courage as an ESLR this week.
Soccer Unit:
Week 1:
Dribbling Drills- The students will focus on dribbling a soccer ball this week. The students will work on using the inside of their foot and keeping their head up while dribbling. The students are going to first work on dribbling in an open area. The speed will begin slow to fast depending on experience in the class. The students will then advance on to cone drills to better control the ball through obstacles. The last part will be with the a defender dribbling a ball to get free in open space. The object for the students are to remain in control of the ball at all times on the offensive side. The high school students are taking the dribbling to the next level compared to middle school. The students are to have harder courses with more defenders to try and figure out which foot should be used and when. Overall, the students are advancing their knowledge from previous classes. The ESLR for this week is Vitality.
Week 2:
Passing and Shooting Drills- The students will continue working on Dribbling as a review. The next phase will be passing with the sides of our feet for short and long distances. The students will work on passing stationary with a partner. This can vary on distances depending on how advance the students are. The students can be adjusted for longer passes if very experienced. The students will then work on passing with a partner through gates while moving. The object then is for the students to control their passes and hit accuracy in between the cones. The last part of the week is the shooting drills. The students are going to use the inner laces of their shoe, to insure the best form possible for the students. The students will shoot against the wall, then lastly with a goalie. This focus is not to score, but to have the correct kicking form. The students will work on passing through defenders while moving up and down the field. In high school the students have a higher skill level of passing, in which the students need to learn to pass with accuracy more in the class than the basic passing dThe ESLR for this week will be Courage.
Week 3:
Defense/Games- The students will advance their skills in dribbling and passing for review during each class. A new topic for the week with be defensive and offensive skills during game play. The students when to position themselves between the player and the goalie, and what areas each position defends. The students will learn to play a live full game during class. The rules and skill cues from previous lessons will be incorporated and re-learned when needed. The ESLR for this week will be Sensitivity.
Week 4:
Games: The students will put everything that was learned together into one final week. The object is to play 7 v 7 maybe 8 v 8 on the field. The rules of the game will be reviewed and the students will get a chance to actually put all the skills they learned into live action. The focus of the week is to have fun but remember everything they have been taught, when it comes to passing, dribbling, and shooting. The students will be assessed on their game play and how much they are participating. The ESLR for the week is Vitality.
Inquiry 4: Orientation in Space and Time: Baseball and Swimming #2
Baseball Unit:
Week 1:
Throwing and Catching- The students will move past the basics of throwing and catching. The students will focus on throwing for accuracy and distance. The students will learn when to throw high or when to throw line drives. The students will also work on pitching this week to learn how to grip the ball a few different ways.The students will first learn how to grip a ball then how to throw it. The students will work on throwing with partners and then targets against the wall. This will bring the students into the next topic of fielding. The students will learn how to field a ground ball and a pop fly.The ESLR for the week is Intelligence.
Week 2:
Striking with bat- The students will continue working on fielding situations this week. We will talk about runners on base, and how to base run on offense. The students will continue to work on where to throw the ball to get an out, and how to position themselves in the right spot to better field and throw the ball to the specific base. The students will then begin to work on hitting, in which they will focus on hitting line drives or ground balls. The idea is for the students to swing level. The ESLR for the week is Compassion.
Week 3:
Games- The students will begin to learn about the rich history of the game of baseball and how it is played today around the world. The students will learn the rules of the game and how to run the bases. The students will then get a chance to play a live game this week using the rules and base running tips. The students are using the throws, catch, swinging skills that were taught throughout the previous weeks. The ESLR for the week is Sensitivity.
Swimming Unit:
Week 1:
Introduction to Swimming- Rules and Breathing- Students will learn the safety Rules of the Swimming Pool. Students will learn to adjust to the water. Students will then learn Basic Breathing Skills in the water. The main focus of this week is going over the Freestyle, Backstroke, and Breaststroke. This will be first a review and the second week will get more in depth with this. The students have learned these strokes from the first semester. This should be a review for the second semester.The ESLR for the week will be Courage.
Week 2:
Focus on Improving Skills- The students will focus this week on improving their swimming ability in open water. The students will use each class to focus on one stroke.The first stroke will be Freestyle. The major focus for this stroke is endurance, since most students get the skill and cues down pretty quickly. The students will learn how to swim over time. The second class is Backstroke and how to use this as an alternative stroke to stay above the water. The students will focus on technique and keeping their chin up. The students in the third class will focus on Breaststroke which is usually the hardest and needs the most improvement. The students will continue to work on this and improve over the third class. The ESLR for the week will be Vitality.
Week 3:
Swimming Drills- The students will learn about lifeguard skills this week. The students will learn about treading water for a long period of time, swimming in open water, saving someone, and partial CPR. These are very serious topics an something the students should know in case of emergencies happen in their lives. The biggest focus will be the test at the end of the week on the material they learned from during this week. The ESLR for the week will be Compassion.
Week 4:
Swimming Games- The last week of the year and Inquiry will be about games. The three big games will be Water Polo, Basketball, and Rugby in the pool. The students will learn about these during each class, with a focus on one each class. The first class we will learn about Water Polo. The second class will be about Basketball, and the third class will be about Rugby. The ESLR for the week with be Vitality.
